Baby Teeth 02:52
I don’t know if I will ever lose my baby teeth Feed me peanut butter brownies, little cups of peach Your pet alligator wishes he could last a round with me My appetite will never end Mother nature father writer Crime of passion, we got needles in our sleeves No rhyme or reason, we got needles in our sleeves Go wash your mouth out, we got needles in our sleeves I know I will never be as good as Owen Pallett at making you cry But in the sanctuary tree house, I’m the only one controlling the button To make the rockets crash into the ocean And the pilots bail Mother nature father writer Child of season, fight with needles in your sleeves My wide-eyed pirate, fight with needles in your sleeves Go smite those giants, fight with needles in your sleeves My wind-up tyrant, fight with needles in your sleeves

My blood flows thin after mice get in Rip right through the foundation Chew up fabric not intended to protect against invasion Tear out chunks of my grandfather’s favorite chair Like it’s not even there If you’re so smart, then Jesus Christ, get to your calculus and save us Just cause my dog sometimes sleeps with both eyes open Doesn’t mean she’ll take an active role in keeping beasts at bay For public safety Write out words on the sidewalk Ponder the rainfall Promise to try a little harder

Tina 03:50
As a boy you were in love with a boa constrictor She draped herself over the branches of a tree behind some glass You visited after school at the children’s museum Could you feed her a rat when the dinner bell rang? I could not I could not I cannot watch something die You would find another coiled inside your grandfather’s canoe You wouldn’t touch the water, while your brother wore his life jacket so well And you were right to shudder Nature doesn’t smile on the ones who haven’t sinned Could you feed her a mouse when the dinner bell rang? I could not I could not I cannot watch something die

Tadpoles 02:54
Will love make sense when they breach the fortress walls? I found my journals I’m not the boy I used to be Here it comes on another vacant sea Here it comes from another empty canopy Don’t make Jamie build a clock Just cause the tadpoles learned how to walk Would love make sense if we sank it in the pond? I heard grown-ups talk about their life expectancies Here it comes from the little room upstairs Here it comes I have never felt so unprepared Don’t make Jamie build a clock Just cause the tadpoles learned how to walk We made our castle in a tree on someone else’s property Collected scabby eucalyptus shavings Fortified our ranks And shouted words into the breeze that we could barely comprehend: “Think big.” “Think big.” “Think big.” “Think big.” "Think big." "Think big."

Little animal, are you sensing? Are you feeling? Are you tugging on my sleeve? I will give you what you want Little animal, what’s your secret? Tell me what you don’t understand Take a sip from a glass of water Cauterize your wounds I got messed up I can’t hold my head up straight Lead me to my private burial Back behind the brush In the corner of your garden Little animal, are you crying? Where’s your favorite toy? Are you making a nest? Is it invasive if I watch? Little animal, find my beacon Find my flashing light I can’t remember the way it feels to go to sleep alone I’m so messed up I can’t hold my head up straight/focus my eyes on a single point Guide me to my private burial Back behind the brush In the corner of your garden

Heirloom, you muzzle and multiply I’ve thought of a plausible alibi Leave me in peace and return to your stall in the market If talking to strangers was dangerous How perturbed we’d be when the three of us Swallowed our pride and plastered our eyes to the moon Because casing the places that sold the goods Wasn’t quite our conception of brotherhood We promised ourselves great reward when the times changed I took up my arms and made camp on the tiled floor You were bearing your teeth like a dinosaur When it finally happened to us like everyone said it eventually would I remember the sting of the afternoon When we lost track of time chasing red balloons You stood on the doorstep bellowing threats like a monster But nothing could stop us, we rocketed past you Our house was on fire, but I knew I’d outlast you And then there are days that I’m certain I made a mistake Cause down on the carpet I was losing my mind While the painters labored on your redesign And I still had a number of secrets to cling to when it was convenient I developed respect for the cages You stayed on your sofa for ages I’ve already stopped trying to erase the mark When the floor drops out When your jaw goes slack When the faucets burst When the glaciers melt When the earth turns sour When the people stare When the cities fall When the oceans swell When the light burns out When the sun explodes When the cars collide When the wheels fall off When our eyes connect And the systems fail

Afternoon, you landed on the windowsill And made an awful sound I carefully unwound the string And flew the kite to take the morning back "I won't let you grow up." Apricots and stolen cars are funny things to find together Chimney sweeps and battered knees And climbing trees with you is never boring "I won't let you grow up."

about

I wrote most of this album in September and October 2016, having torn a muscle in my foot and become basically immobile. I wrote "Hansel and Grendel" some time in 2012. A lot of the album's content and characters (real and imaginary) developed using that song as a starting point.

The tree mentioned in "Baby Teeth", "Tadpoles", and "I Won't Let You Grow Up" is located in Palo Alto, CA, as are the remains of the first snake described in "Tina".

The whereabouts of the second snake are unknown.
